Peppermint Lip Balm

One of the interesting things of starting to create your DIY skin products is that you can create it to your tasting. A week ago I bought a 10 euro lip balm from LUSH. I was really inspired by their products, they are all so colorful and wow, it smelled amazing in there!

I think the lip balm is nice, smells a bit citric and feels nice on the lips, though I don't really like the texture and it doesn't seem to last much, like it doesn't protect my lips. So, I found that making your own lip balm is rather easy.... Here we go!

Apparently the little science for lip balm is to use 1 part wax and 3 parts oil, or 1 part oil, 1 part wax, 1 part butter. I chose this last one since it allows me to use the products I want!

Recipe:

  • 30gr beeswax (natural, yellow and organic)

  • 30gr cocoa butter (amazing for lips! It moisturizes, soothes rashes, and my favourite, it leaves a protective layer on the lips ideal to face wind and all weather)

  • 30gr coconut oil

I'll be using peppermint essential oil and a pill of curcuma to give this lip balm a lovely yellow color.

This recipe ended up filling 8 tubes and 8 pots of 5ml. I'm rather happy at how this turned out.

First I melted the wax and the oils together. This took a bit of time since the beeswax has a higher melting point (62/64 degrees) than cocoa butter (34/38 degrees) and of course higher than coconut butter that literally melts at the touch with the skin (24 degrees).

Once it's all melted you will not have a lot of time to work with it. I recommend to prepare your tubes and pots beforehand.

At this point I added the essence and the curcuma (I had to give it a touch with the stick blender to incorporate it well). And then it's all about filling your containers (luckily I had a pot with a pouring tip, but it's hard to make your tubes look good at the end since the wax contracts a bit and it dries quite quickly, for this some people recommend using a hot air gun, I ended up filling the top with a few extra drops and I kinda like the result).

The best part of all this is that you can use it almost immediately. I am in lip balm heaven!!!! It leaves a lovely feeling on your lips, using just a tiny bit of product, it protects your lips, you can literally feel a layer of balm on your lips. I put it on last night when going to bed and this morning I could still feel my lips soft and moistured. So happy!!!!
